In most cases, your doctor will reduce your dosage by 5% to 25% in the first week. Every 1 to 4 weeks after that, they’ll reduce your dose by another 5% to 25% of the original dose. The 2022 survey mentioned above also asked respondents to what extent withdrawal symptoms affected their lives. They could rate each problem as nonexistent, mild, moderate, severe, quite severe, or enormous. Benzodiazepines have a sedative effect because of how they work in your brain. These drugs mimic the effects of a neurotransmitter called gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA).

5. Treatment for Benzodiazepine Withdrawal

If this does not adequately calm the patient, it may be necessary to sedate him or her using diazepam. Provide 10-20ng of diazepam every 30 minutes until the patient is adequately sedated. The patient should be observed during sedation and no more diazepam given if signs of respiratory depression are observed. Symptomatic treatment can be used in cases where residual withdrawal symptoms persist (Table 3).

Because benzo withdrawal can be uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous, you shouldn’t stop benzos abruptly if you’ve been taking them for more than a few days. A number of people are expressing fears that some benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms last for ever, and that they can never completely recover.
