In most cases, your doctor will reduce your dosage by 5% to 25% in the first week. Every 1 to 4 weeks after that, they’ll reduce your dose by another 5% to 25% of the original dose. They could rate each problem as nonexistent, mild, moderate, severe, quite severe, or enormous. Benzodiazepines have a sedative effect because of how they work in your brain. 5. Treatment for Benzodiazepine Withdrawal

If this does not adequately calm the patient, it may be necessary to sedate him or her using diazepam. Provide 10-20ng of diazepam every 30 minutes until the patient is adequately sedated. The patient should be observed during sedation and no more diazepam given if signs of respiratory depression are observed. Symptomatic treatment can be used in cases where residual withdrawal symptoms persist (Table 3).

Sleeping pills and minor tranquillisers

Because benzo withdrawal can be uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous, you shouldn’t stop benzos abruptly if you’ve been taking them for more than a few days. And regardless of how long you’ve been taking benzos, talk to your healthcare provider before stopping them. They can help you come up with a plan for how to lower your dose slowly. A number of people are expressing fears that some benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms last for ever, and that they can never completely recover.

Management of mild alcohol withdrawal (AWS score 1-

• They do not herald the onset of madness; they are simply instances of benzodiazepines playing tricks on the brain which will right itself in time.
• People who have been through acute withdrawal often say that this phase is the most difficult.

These ions change the neuron’s electrical charge, so it has to work much harder to activate and send signals. None of these symptoms is harmful, and they need not be a cause of worry once they are understood. Some of these are listed below, but it is beyond the scope of this booklet to give details of each technique or to mention all of them.

Protracted withdrawal syndrome
